Make palisades easier (getting leather faster) to make

Argument for:
  • Extreme power creep means you get rage in 2-4 hours now, and vandal in like 12 or less making early game PVP much faster
  • Most methods for protecting yourself early game have been removed this world
  • Won't somebody think of the poor sprucecaps that somehow always don't have a pali after days/weeks
  • It's kinda cringe that you have to guard a drying frame and tanning tubs for like 40 hours straight or your progress gets reset

Arguments against:
  • Chaos is fun
  • The unfairness of early raids does sorta mean the lesser groups get a chance to fuck up bigger groups sometimes, which is cool, even if it's usually not the case
  • I'm a hypocrite for suggesting this now it affects me, when hermits who didn't know cave strats and such have lived like this for years
  • People spamming cheap palisades at you super early would be a bit cringe

Most of my suggestions I've thought through and I'm objectively right. This one I'm very half and half about.

Hey jorb, you could always just allow us to build claim poles in front of caves, and make the exclusion zone only affect palisades, cause you know... that was the only thing that needed fixing.

Imagine they don't change current implementation. I can't even think about early world fiesta

Just to make sure I understand what Nightdawg and Noindy are talking about... people used to make "leather caves" with filled drying racks and prepped tanning tubs inside, then place a claim in front of the cave entrance to "seal" it? When leather is done, just declaim to "pop the bottle." (Obviously you leave at least one character inside, to move the dry hide into the tubs.)

For this to work, cave system needs to have just one natural entrance - then only practical way to breach it would be to dig a tunnel there, which would cost lots of early metal to do safely/consistently. Especially if the cave is sufficiently isolated from other cave systems. Some caves meet up close enough that you could realistically just get lucky and breach with zero cave-ins.

Everything goes in the cave, including hearthfires. You just bounding box integrity your way out through the claim pole. This has been the meta ever since I started playing.

I feel like the whole first week is retarded in its own way. The chaos is somewhat fun, but it's only acceptable because I know how to make my chance of succeeding my first week with leather as high as possible by hiding in single entrance caves, stacking my tanning tubs in a cart far away from the entrance and staying out of sight at all cost. If I were a new players and got my claim/hides/tanning tubs demolished and stolen every single time for the first week(s) without any explanation I would be pissed as fuck and quit the game forever. It would feel like Rust on steroids without knowing that it gets a lot better and chill after your palisade is up.

I bet that player retention is like 1% top for solo new players in the first week, even though it could be MUCH higher if settling in the first week would be made somewhat easier.

I feel like both staking claim and drying leather/palisades should somehow be made easier and definitely be introduced better to make the first week a bit more newbie friendly. Why even launch the game on Steam if you know that all new players you gain will quit instantly because your early game mechanics are completely fucked? A big chunck of the (silent) current playerbase likes hiding behind a wall and just build their own little homestead. You have to make sure that all these new players get the chance to experience that as well before they ragequit.

Same. One time I stayed up until like 4am to run scout alts. First time I ever consumed energy drinks.
