Metal progression critique

Postby Fostik » Sun Nov 24, 2024 12:16 am

So it became vividly clear that previous metal progression system with only 3 tiers (soft metals, bronze and iron) were replaced with 5 tiers progression system(soft metals, bronze, cast iron, wrought iron, steel), opening wrought iron since L4 minehole, and steel since L5 minehole.

Considering in progression there's so called "cast iron age", I wanted to highligh that's it's quite empty of content, as there are exactly 3 new things you can do with cast iron, finding it on L3: Windmill, Volva's wand and Cast Iron Trivet.

For "wrought iron age", there is little more unique items being available Butcher's Cleaver, Chainmail Shirt, Druid's Helm, Fyrdsman's Sword, Hirdsman's Helmet, Winged Helmet

In my opinion, there was not enough content to split progression into multiple, so I wanted to say it's bad.

to be fair. wrought iron is also next to useless.
wrought arms and armour are worse than bronze, its really just feathered helmets, and some quality pushing .

Yeah I'm not sure what their reasoning for changing it this way would be, if they wanted to slow down overall progression why not just lock certain levels of technology behind time based world events or something and new advancements are unlocked at each stage so it really does give the impression of a stone age, bronze age, iron age, etc.

Factions/larger villages would still likely make better preparations for when those technological developments occur in comparison to small villages/hermits and newbies, but at the very least it might give the majority of players more time overall to prepare themselves in terms of claim security and other important early game steps if for instance the "stone age" took place over the first two weeks of a world. The next age might be the same or up to double the previous amount of time, and so on. I also think it would be interesting and helpful for casuals if they had more opportunity to go up against combat oriented players BEFORE they start outfitting themselves in higher tier/quality equipment and sailing around in snekkjas in the first week.

Steel was the only thing that needed to be locked further. Though a little extra time before B12s pop up is kinda nice.
