IMO mining would be a bit more fun without the constant weapon swapping. Pickaxe would still be pretty bad in hunting if you gave it 80% B12 damage, 200% attack cooldown, and no or very low armor pen.
Alternatively, special just baseline pickaxes do more damage to slimes? Slime dungeon where the reward is pickaxes do 500% damage to slimes?
Here's some stuff I found with a quick Google search:
it is designed to wedge into hard surfaces and then serve as a fulcrum to pry open rocks. Not the most ideal weapon when you have to pry it from everything you hit.
It is heavy and unwieldy. It cannot be used in different ways to make it more effective in differing situations. It would get stuck in armor. Also since hitting a critical area on a moving target in battle is difficult in any situation, have a weapon that is extremely linear in its attack patterns makes a poor combat tool.
So even from a realism perspective, Snail's suggestion sounds reasonable.
