Joining late rant

Postby Mippo » Fri May 02, 2025 3:56 pm

I don’t like how, when you join late, the best way to make progress is to look for inactive bases to loot, which means missing out on most of the early-game fun. Everything a new player can achieve is overshadowed by the free resources left behind by inactive players.

Why do all the work when there’s a large village on the map—possibly right next to you—that’s about to go inactive?

I don’t like handicapping myself with self-imposed challenges. Waiting for the next wipe seems to be the only solution.

Any advice? W16 not dead yet?

In my personal opinion, all worlds should span exactly 6 months and 2 days, as is needed for an average player to experience enough content without growing too bored. Upon exceeding the limit, Jorb will be stabbed with a pitchfork.

Discuss.

Your "personal opinion" is really nothing more than a collective consciousness. Of course, I will not dream of people having their own consciousness. But I still dream of such wonderful games not suffering from wipe and maintaining progress for as long as possible. As long as the developers obey the will of the unconscious mass and go with the flow, nothing interesting will happen. Only by moving from oneself, no matter what, is the great and eternal born.

Because it's fun.

For example, you can play as a tramp-thief, whose religion does not allow him to work, and he uses only what he has stolen. Use your imagination ¦]

It's not something unique for the game to create incentives for you to trade with others. There are a lot of mechanics that even on start of the world creates significant differences between players:
- ability to find only one of tin or lead on a very large part of map on l1
- inability to find wine glance on l2 in time (blocks access to anvil)
- inability to find iron ochre on l4 in time (blocks wrought tech to build next minehole)
- inability to find bloodstone on l5 in time (blocks steel tech to build next minehole)
Not mentioning the quality shifts and randomness of key resources different parties can find, but others don't.

So I don't see a problem at all in joining late, I would even prefer that - you can buy/trade/scavenge, moreover with high farming you can find very high quality www's to catch-up in crop qualities.

forgive my impertinence, but if the idea was to experience the early-game fun, then why not play when the world is young in the first place? the 'optimal' mode of play is a judgement based on your state of knowledge. i question also your notion of handicaps or self imposed challenges. buy a token and pick up gear from a market if this is such a concern, and if your time is so valuable. maybe you don't really like the game, it is hard to tell what you really want.

i see new neighbors appear all the time, who are clearly experienced, that manage to single-handedly grow a village from nothing within a month.

all said, you could complain just as well about how optimal play includes other people at all, or more than just your own hands (alts/bots). trade could be considered out of bounds within this perspective. you are imposing challenges on yourself by feeling this way. at the end of the day, this is a multiplayer persistent world that moves along with or without you. what you consider to be worth your time is up to you, and your idea of fulfillment that you derive the game is your own. no one can tell you if it is "worth" or sufficiently alive or dead to satisfy your needs.

tl:dr - satisfaction comes from within
