Discovery of the fools

Postby Händler » Sun Jan 04, 2026 1:12 pm

It would be tremendously sick if there was some kind of FromSoftware-esque recording of any hearthling's movement animations during their last moments, so you could not simply discover Runestones and skeletons, but some ghostly imagery to better experience the story of what happened to the poor folk.

Bonus if the deaded player can write into a prompted field his last words for the viewer of the ghostly images to read.

That is all. Thank you for reading.

I knew you wouldn't let me down, I was testing you.

EDIT

A Jew says to a friend: ‘Do you remember my son? You know that I always raised him to respect the Jewish religion. Something strange happened: I sent him to Israel so that he could grow up as a true Jew, and he... came back a Christian.’ ‘Strange,’ said his friend, ‘I also raised my son to respect religion, but when I sent him to Israel, he came back a Christian too.’ "This is very strange, let's talk to the rabbi: “Our children, whom we raised as true Jews, went to Israel and came home as Christians.” 'This is very strange because my son also went to Israel and, despite being raised as a true Jew, he came home as a Christian.' So what can we do? And the rabbi said: “Let us ask the Lord: Lord of Israel, God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, hear us, we want to ask Your advice: our children, all excellent Jews, went to Israel and came home Christians, what can we do?”. And God said: “This is very strange, because My son too...”.

"some kind of ... recording of any hearthling's movement animations during their last moments"

Every time I've buried some poor deceased hearthling I've thought about something like this. In general, if I find them in a lake or river I assume they drowned trying to swim too early; if they're on land, without a head, I assume they were killed by anotehr player; if they're intact on land I assume they were killed by an animal.

A few months into the last world I found a runestone out in the wilderness, "I am not long for this world. I can feel the snake venom coursing through my veins as I write this. Please bury me." A few tiles away was a grave I assume was this person. I like to think that meant we had at least one empathetic neighbor.

A couple of worlds earlier a village mate found a skeleton by a runestone, "My home was raided. I've lost everything. Please bury me." My friend made a cart there, put the skeleton and runestone in it, and hearthed home. We buried them in our cemetary, said a few words, placed flowers on the grave, and placed the runestone at the foot of it. But I've always wondered how they died.
