I’ve been thinking about ways to add more flavor and identity to crafted items, and I wanted to share an idea (or two). Surely I’m not the first to suggest these things, but I’ll add to the thinking cloud.
1. Craftsman Signatures (Etching or Writing Your Name on Items)
It would be really immersive if players could optionally etch their name onto crafted items, with a specific tool (engraving knife, chisel, etc.) or via Hearth Magic.
Or unlocked through a relevant skill.
Not necessarily for all items — maybe limited to weapons, armor, high-tier crafted goods... alcohol or pipeweed with a brand name, anyone? No? Just me? Ok… how about picture frames to not only display paintings but add names to them and their artists (if they are brave enough to say it is their own work
... other limitations could include allowing only crafted items above a certain quality threshold to be etched with signatures...
The signature could appear as:
Hunter’s Bow (crafted by Malagast)
or
Hunter’s Bow
— Etched by ????
Completely optional, of course — some players may prefer anonymity.
This would add identity to trade, let famous crafters build a reputation, make gifts and heirlooms more meaningful, and of course add roleplay depth.
It would feel very “craftsman-like,” especially in a world as immersive as Haven.
2. Custom Item Names (With Original Name Preserved)
Alongside signatures, it would be amazing if certain items (again maybe weapons or higher-tier gear) could be renamed.
For example:
“Widowmaker”? Lol
(Hunter’s Bow)
The original item name would remain visible in brackets for clarity and mechanics.
This would again only add flavor and let legendary items actually feel legendary… I would say, anyway
Custom naming could maybe require a cost, be permanent, or be limited per character
...or require high skill investment.
3. Rarity System (Optional Idea – might not fit Haven but I can only imagine the potential for crafting in general)
This is more ambitious, but inspired loosely by systems like Wurm Online.
Imagine certain crafted items having a small chance to become rare… or epic… or “insert word and cool glowing effect.”
This could provide a small or bigger buff depending on rarity, or, as previously mentioned, purely visual effects (subtle glow, particle effect, special border), or both.
Not something game-breaking — just enough to add extra excitement to crafting.
(It is one of the major reasons Wurm Online retains players to this day…
It could add another layer to the crafting meta, make high-end crafting more thrilling, and introduce memorable, sought-after items into the world.
Even just a visual distinction would go a long way.
I know especially the rarity system would be a larger undertaking, but even just the signature + naming system would add a lot of personality to crafted items.
Haven has always had a strong world identity — this could push that even further by letting players have even more tools to leave their mark on the world in a tangible way.
Curious what others think. Too much? I am a sucker for flavor, which Haven already provides so much of, and this could make things even… tastier.
Bonus idea that has nothing to do with this post — a small experience event for drinking alcohol… would make taking that sip before feasting feel more satisfying and add more value to alcohol, albeit minor.
