I don't know what for, but my fields feel empty without them.

You're looking at it the wrong way.

1. Add new birb - The Rook. Rooks are notorious for pecking at crops. The Rook will at random land at a planted crop tile and start pecking for a while, then it flies away and the crop is destroyed.
2. Players will be able to shoo The Rook from infested crop tile by attacking it and killing it. If attacked in range, via bow or sling, it dies instantly. If attacked in melee, it has a 10% chance to inflict a wound "A Rookie Mistake" on the player, that decreases your Perception by -10 but heals at a fast rate. The icon should be a bird pecking at an eye.
3. THEN add Scarecrows that protect the field by attracting all the Rooks that would otherwise land on your field (they land on the Scarecrow's wide open arms and peck at it instead, slowly deteriorating it's durability. A scarecrow's range equals a Bee Skep range. Repaired with straw. Can, obviously, be cosmetically enhanced by any equippable items displayed on a player's character - hats, glasses, shirts, pants, whatever.

And THAT'S how you add Scarecrows.

Honestly, just implement the agriculture system from Salem. It’s a million times more engaging and fun than what HnH is doing. It even includes crows that you have to fend off.

If it doesn't have a function, is it essentially a reskin mannequin?

Magpies have already stolen my flax twice, and a scarecrow could protect me from these little scoundrels.
