Criminal collision

Postby Over10n » Fri Mar 13, 2026 12:38 am

While exploring the game mechanics during the game, I encountered a situation where the game's rules turned an ordinary, peaceful player into a criminal. I started with a small plot of land and built everything necessary for the beginning of the game. However, as I progressed, I encountered the need to expand my building area. Surprisingly, I discovered portal routes that extended beyond the initial plot. The game mechanics required me to use my criminal skills, such as Rage and Vandalism, to clear the area of portal stones. Why does the game mechanics make me a criminal if I'm legally (from the game's perspective) occupying space and just want to expand my building area? Why do I need Rage and Vandalism if I don't want to attack people in the game or destroy other people's buildings? Why do I need restrictions like not being able to enter my base's gates (with Rage learned) when someone throws an aggro script at me from a boat and chases after me?

It seems that new players who play in small groups have to put up with obviously flawed game mechanics that do not take into account multiple aspects of the game.

If someone build a road and claimed the starting stone, all the roadpoints (from the game's perspective) are legally protected via said claim by a law of common sense because you can't expect players to put a separate claim on every roadsign if they don't want them destroyed daily.

Therefore, you have committed a criminal act of Vandalism upon other players' legally owned property protected by the game's NOT flawed (at least in this particular case) mechanics.

I hope that answers your question. Welcome to Hafen.

Also, inb4 the "git gud" crowd throws poop at you for not being very well versed in this game:
- Hafen has quite the learning curve, you play for years and still get surprised by mechanics, and those tend to change, like, every few months. That's just how it is. You play, learn on your mistakes, play more or leave.
- Plan your base beforehand. Roadsigns, ledges, rocky terrain, water, everything can mess up your preferred layout.
- If you absolutely have to vandalize something, it's not that much of a fuss to raise up a vandal alt to do your dirty work and keep your character pristine.
- It's not the game mechanics that's flawed (in most cases they're the best version, and there were dozens of previous attempts t figure out what's the best one). It's most likely your lack of experience and understanding. Refer to the first pointer. Learning curve.

It's better than the alternative of every roadsign just being free-for-all smashable. You're kinda trying to cut your own nose off with this one.

I'll give you that there is no clear indication of an ownership/claim like you have with claimed land, where you can easily identify what is claimed and what isn't.

It would be nifty if there was some sort of indicators for these sorts of things, but it's not that much of a biggie.

Gimme a break, he literally had to "restrict" his character with Rage and Vandalism to smash that roadsign, you think he missed the part that it was an owned/claimed object? XD

agree roads should not be included in "conflict incentives", there's already thingwalls and localized resources, and pvpers dont need incentive at all, they go after trouble
