More usages for Sweetgum tree

Postby KrondosBR » Sun May 10, 2026 2:45 am

IRL the sweetgum tree was used for many purposes.

The bark produces a balsam named Storax, it was used as cough medicine, and to heal wounds and skin infections, IRL it is harvested by scraping the outer bark and after a few days a thick amber resin that is the Storax appears. In game we could harvest the resin by haversting the bark and when it grows back you also get an option to harvest the sap. to turn into the balsam in game it should be boiling cauldron + sweetgum sap + clay jar = Storax Balsam, it could be used to treat bee stings or scrapes over time.

The fruitpods produce shikimic acid wich is necessary to make anti flu medicine, so if we ever get the flu in game, we already got the means to fight it. This should be something you use in an alchemist table to create a medicine.

Well i dont think we'll ever have diarrhea or dysentery in the game (i can't thank Jorb enough for that), but we have swamp fever, it will heal over time, and the sweetgum bark can be turned into tea that will treat all these problems, so what i had in mind was, boiling cauldron + 3 or more sweetgum barks + clayjar = Sweetgum bark tea that makes the swamp fever heals faster.

Also sweetgum trees could get a special bark type in the game

The sap of a sweetgum tree was used and still is used as a natural chewing gum, the sweetgum sap the Storax is a natural chewing gum that could be equiped in the mouth slot, i searched for the effects of chewing gum, it increase alertness and attention up to 10%, basically increasing your focus, and it also lowers stress levels, so maybe it could give a + to perception, since focus is perception (this is optional BS). maybe we could even get an animation of the character mouth moving.

Sorry for any typing errors

Yes, i pointed out the real world uses, in north america back in the old days settlers and natives used this tree to diferent medicinal uses, and currently in game outside of general wood usage it serves no purpose, i presented many IRL uses that could be used in game to give the tree more usage.

I think some trees could be more interesting, i am fascinated by this game and how deep its mechanics are, everytime i get something new i go to ring of brodgar to search what it does, and what kills me is some things that got no use like larch trees and its almost waterproof wood and it's tumpertune that's used asantiseptic or Rosin, used in isntruments, and sweetgum trees and its medicinal uses.

Yeah there are altogether too many random trees and bushes that are just bullshit and don't do anything. Not that every individual type should necessarily even have a distinct use, but there could really stand to be more stuff like this. +1

this, when they add a tree with significant historical use like oak trees (and formerly willow trees) with their bark, rowan trees and their berries, etc but dont implement that historical use it feels really odd and pointless, so +1 (please jorb make oak bark unique and give more tannins)

Got it. Overall, the idea is good.

In particular, with liquidambr itself, it's a bit worse – the game has two of the four ailments you mentioned that it can be used to cure. There's also a chewing straw, a curiosity, which is equipped in the mouth slot and provides a boost to perception (and survival).
Perhaps you should come up with some other ways it can be used.

I cant, it wouldnt be realistic, the only actual benefit to chew gum that can be used in game is focus, maybe charisma

Yes, people who chew gum are very charismatic. Like cows.

I wasn't suggesting inventing more uses, but rather citing more. Perhaps what you've cited is sufficient. But there may be more—for example, I read that it was used in perfumes, cigar boxes, and picture frames.
