The Steam window pops up when I launch the game and get the client selection. After that, where the Steam window pops up, we can see this: (If you call shift+tab at this moment).

Otherwise everything works

There is simple solution for setting Steam app id.
Create a file "steam_appid.txt" in your current working directory, write 3051280 in it and save it.

Yes, I know, it's not great, but I really don't know what to do about it. I've been looking for ways to get Steam to not show the pop-up or overlay in the chooser window, but I've found nothing so far.

That works in the CWD? I thought it had to be in the same directory as the Java executable.

Tbh I think you just need to make it a fancy window with a bigger splash screen. Make it 800*600, ask jorb for some art work, add some minimal styling. The current window looks quite sad.

guys can I just ignore these messages if I'm not uploading my client to Steam?
[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; no appID found.
Either launch the game from Steam, or put the file steam_appid.txt containing the correct appID in your game folder.

adding 3051280 to steam_appid.txt ...

[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; connect to global user failed.

Yes. They do bother me too, though. I'm considering ways of making the Steam functionality more a plugin than strictly built into the core client.
