How to edit/add images .res file in jar

Hi all,
i've downloaded the client java code and i'm modifing the gui, for everything in .java file no problem.

But how can i add or modify the .res images in the .jar?

I know i can open jar with archive manager or explore it in java ide (ex. eclipse), but how to convert .res in PNG?
I know the images are PNG inspecting the mime type in a text viewer, but simply renaming the .res in .png doesn't work because in the very beginning of the file there is data specific of .res [Haven Resource 1 image].

I think there would be a fast method to edit resource files than editing one by one, removing the .res specific header, saving as png, modify the image, re-add resource header and insert it in to the .jar!!!

Any help would be very apreciated! Thanks

I do it super inefficiently by just ripping the images out and then editing the image and then building a new Jar with the string/whatever metadata as the file name.
