What's the website client doing different to keybinds?

The website's client keybinds work regardless of the keyboard layout you set (for example, latin or cyrilic alphabets), but when I compiled the default vanilla client (git://sh.seatribe.se/hafen-client), it doesn't work.

What's different? How can I add this to my client too?

This is the branch that Loftar has been working on for the last few months, and if you fetch it, the problem described by you does not exist on this branch. Within this branch a new system for handling mouseDown mouseUp KeyEvents and etc. However, Loftar has not merged it into the master.
