Not a lot more needs to be said. It's a win-win situation for everyone. We get fresh meat, developers get potential donators.

Or then they can add cosmetics that you can buy and other non-game affective stuff.

Yes, after all, who wouldn't want to download a shitty malware client just to play games that could be played just as well without it? ¦]

It's to target fresh players looking for a nice game, not for existing Haven veterans. Who knows? You can be the next Unturned.

Are you considering this loftar?

There are some serious free player gains from Greenlight. It won't hurt to at least try.

This. Steam is more than just another form DRM, it's also a social platform, and hey, since the game is free, people won't be afraid to at least try out this new game all their friends are playing.
It will also show up in the most played list, at least in the world start, bringing in even more players.
If you don't want to pay the $100 greenlight fee out of your pocket, set up a donation drive or something.

Well, there is a small part of me that considers it from time to time. I don't really want to touch Steam with a 10-foot pole myself, though, which creates kind of a problem in the context. ^^

Come on. I'll pay all your Steam fees. + There's nothing wrong with doing it.
