I considered that too. :) I'd love to see something like that, but it probably is a bit complicated overall.

I'd like to see an identity system implemented as well. Right now all we can do is click "chat" to figure out who someone is. This means we still can do it, but it is extremely cumbersome. Removing the tediousness would be very helpful.

I don't want to see floating name bubbles, but I think it would be cool to have a name pop up (say in the corner) when you mouse over someone (this could even work for items which would help you to know when they are actually selected).

Mousing-over people to see their names is retarded as hell.
What happens when the player is hiding behind a tree? Does their name magically appear when the mouse passes over them? In some games i've played, the developers neglected to fix this very issue, making the entire choice of being a "stealth" character completely useless. (the same goes for MMOs where your name floats over your head, and FPSes where enemy names appear on screen when you aim at them; despite being in a 100% dark room)

I think the only time the player should ever be able to see another players' name is when the opposite player says something specifically to you, or you are friended with them, or in a village with that player. That way when you walk into a village square and see some 10 players you have never seen before, their names remain unknown until they speak to you or they friend you/accept you into the village.

Obviously though if someone KOs you or murders you forcing you to reincarnate, you'd be given their name.
The Dwarf is making a plaintive gesture. He doesn't really care about anything any more.

I'm sure J&L are capable of implementing it in a non-retarded way...

Only if that's how the dev's want it... there's no reason they couldn't check to make sure the player is the highest sprite under the mouse.

I agree that you shouldn't automatically know the name of someone you've never met before... Limiting it to people in your village/party/kin list is probably an easy way of doing it, but I can think of plenty of IRL situations where I know someone's name without them having told me... How/Weather to model that is up to the dev's

I agree with the theTrav. I'm sure they are more than capable of making it work and certainly its possible to limit which character's names you know. Until there is some other way to distinguish one guy in linen pants from the next, you need names. If you need names, you need an easy way to tell who is who. There are plenty of times where I've needed to find a specific character and I have to click and "chat" with each person around me to find the right one...talk about annoying, especially with the lag still in the interface.

They were thinking of a way to mask ones name.
The ones who see things differently.

You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
