I usually try to get new players to catch lots of fish and in return give then leather armor that they can't craft yet. They get LP, armor and backpacks, I get fish without having to spend a lot of time fishing, it's win win win win.

The people who guided me first helped me find a rock to get stone chips (I found my own tree); I made axes till I got pottery. Then I'm afraid I wrecked some of the landscape around the RoB, ignorantly digging clay and not knowing it wouldn't recover on its own, and forest could not be fixed. Then the first person I met had to log off, and I found someone else, who I moved in with for a while. He basically told me what I could and could not use of his resources, and let me experiment. I harvested some of his wheat and made myself a couple of baskets; he taught me the etiquette of always replanting anything I harvested, and helped me learn to plant straight, and pick up straw hidden behind grown plants. Meanwhile he made me a backpack and, I believe, some leather armor.

Once I'd learned the mechanics a bit, my friend pointed out a possibly suitable spot for my own steading, gave me some advice about layout, found me a well site, and helped me build the well. He also provided me with starting seed. I then got a whole pile of learning points planting fields for myself. Meanwhile I kept myself fed by fishing, not knowing about the way stat growth worked. Once I could finally hunt, the same neighbour let me use his sausage maker, until I finally got to the point where I could afford my own. Meanwhile the first person I met remained kin, and suggested I go into the tea business, so I did - with a loan from him of part of the metal for the cauldron.

As you can imagine, I got a few LP doing all this.

Nice story, thanks for sharing, good to hear that a really good way of making XP is just to help other people out with their stuff and then set up producing things that other people want to consume.

I think the point Coriander was trying to make was that when he started his first character, lp was a lot easier to come by. Now he started an alt and was having more difficulty getting xp this time... didn't they drop the XP you get from picking branches?

Nope, only after you hit 1000xp, which should be more than enough to get the basic crafting and producing skills together. Unless of course coriander wants to go straight for the black skills, in which case I have little sympathy.

Choosing fishing and thinking you can fish in swamps.
... Nope.

The early game is a, not too fun, grind, well aware. Quests will hopefully fix that.

Has this changed? I was fairly certain I was getting 3 tea leaves in some cases (I am high nature).

Hmm, good question. I remember always getting exactly one leaf, but I haven't systematically tested it. How about I verify this next time I'm on and post the results. With a little luck I can get a couple of kinsfolk with different levels of nature/industry to help.

I'm now getting more leaves with a nature character.
