While color coding can get out of hand, a SLIGHT use of it wouldnt be terrible. For example, in north america we have Black, Brown, and Polar Bears...almost identical except for color, size, and lethality. People can and have in real life fought off black bears unarmed, but I havent heard of it happening often with the other two species. Too much color scaling would be silly, though, and not all creatures need color scaling, IMHO.

That said, the main way I would like to see foxes tweaked is making them slightly weaker in the first 3 rings...as it stands, someone who has sunk about 1000 points (which is a lot at the beginning) into learning to use a sword still cant kill a basic fox in ring 0. It would be nice if there were a slightly earlier reward for taking weapon skills.

Im not saying make all foxes weaker. The ones out by mordor are just fine. And that is coming from a resident of Bottleneck.

That is what I was saying, slight coloration is fine, but don't do it to the extent of where there are 10 copies of every animal with outrageous color choices.

I agree with our Swede overlord ;) on the careful use of fantasy monsters so as to avoid spiraling into the ridiculous. However, I think this is not incompatible with having a generally static strength for certain types of animals. A pack of rabid wolves should be enough to take down the hardiest of adventurers for example, lets just have it so that such threats are more likely the further away you get, instead of the animals themselves getting stronger. Really, we don't need an infinitely expanding array of coloured monsters ala Diablo. But there is certainly room for easing the design burden somewhat by having a few animals in a limited variety. I.E. Black Bear. Grizzly Bear, rabid Grizzly, ravenous Grizzly.. etc.

While I shiver in terror at the thought of orcs and goblins ending up in this game, I do think ogres or troll would be appropriate to the mythos. And dragons, while they should be exceedingly rare and insanely strong, are a definite must!
