Well, historically, cavemen and the like WOULD take corn kernels, thrown them into a fire and then grab and eat them as they popped out.

The problem being: You need a special TYPE of corn, normal stuff just burns. The stuff they used for popcorn is so hard it's painful to chew.

This would only be possible if we could cultivate flint corn which wasn't around then

Well, it WAS, but only in Southern America.
