I'm not much of a miner, but I'd rather have to use wood than metal, and not have to use the snake method.

the amount of metal in a support is pretty trivial, I don't find it annoying.

I find trying to walk around snakes extremely annoying.

I like the idea of using single blocks of wood to shore the tunnel, maybe allow it for straight line tunnels and let you put one every 10 or so blocks, but it requires two adjacant tiles to not be mined.

Then what happens when you remove the shoring or mine around it?

The only point of not needing metal for these is for beginning miners who want to tunnel to a metal spot. Say they prospected a node and it's not in direct contact with their cave. Also, these supports never actually used metal in the real world (I bring up realism more because it's a concept the devs seem to like in the game if it's reasonable). The straight line method/ can't place close together makes it so you can't use this for ore extraction. That's what the old support type would be for.

about the area the supports affect, those supports in the pictures look like they only support one direction: further into the cave.
I doubt that it would be hard to code the things so the area they effect is perpendicular to the impassible cave walls on either side. :geek:
Which would probably be all you need to avoid safe exploits, i.e. require any dug out tunnel to be one tile wide.

Well, a crazy person could do some sort of bizarre stripe or hash mine using nothing but these supports, but it'd be a total PITA, and building a proper support would be much better.
