If this was introduced (messages long term) I would definitely suggest they be carry-able on your person like a pet (or have falconeer or something be a job of sorts) and no PMing be allowed (so that you could stand outside someone's place and shoot down all their birds as they send for help)

Although this might be useless if they can contact outside of game, it would be fun to do for sure.

well you have PM's but instead of a mailbox crap like lotro the private chat should allow you to send while the other is offline.. and they get it when they come online
