Think of them as a Recon or Sniper or something that watches the village from high up in a tower?
Not sure how it would know how to tell you there is people outside (aka off the village claim), I suppose it could have some form of counter to let you know how many people are on the claim and how many have been on the claim. How would something like that sound to you, would it be useful?
What if there's only 4 people online in the village and it's walled off, then the guard tells you that there's about 8 people walking around on the claim.
What do you think the villagers will think? It gives them a heads up so no one can ambush them that easily.
In a bigger and more prepared village, that large number will work against the village unfortunately, like a huge village of 30 villagers, if there's a difference of like 2~3 extra people the guards spot, then the villagers understanding that some might be hostile would be minimal.
Basically the smaller the village the more close each villagers are in keeping tabs of the population... But once you get a bit too big, the idea becomes useless.
So then maybe the guard can be trained to describe certain people, like warn if they are wearing armor and is outside your walls?
Basically you can have a system where the guard will know every villager so he wouldn't mistake them as invaders, by letting him memorize their names... Then if a villager is wearing armor and such and comes back from the outside, the guard will know it's him and don't need to warn people.
Maybe the guard can be more of a village crier?
Like:
"Our hunter came back from hunting!"
etc.
