If we have oceans I rather it be one big one, well a very few over all. Like one in with some islands that prety much do one super grids worth of space. But over all an osean has a vew good things and alot of open space. Ya fishing could be done amazingly, but thats like one of the biggest perks of an ocean.

Can one dig a canal? If yes then just dig one.

Do you mean in that they all join up?

I quite like it that they don't, it makes travelling around more tiresome in that you have to get out and carry your boat in places but it also creates nice little havens (lol) esp in early game, where you can be relatively cut off and given a chance to develop.

Saying that, I'm not opposed to oceans, just for the added builds, crafts and content but what I would like more than anything else when it comes to the water systems is an easier way to transport livestock other than one animal on a raft!

I mean something like this:

It would allow long distance travel with large (ie unliftable) vessels while still keeping those nooks and crannies you like and overland shortcuts where you carry your boat to the next water system.

Just for the record, what do you think about Salem's rivers? I know they're far from perfect, so no need to tell me that; I'm just curious about any specific reflections.

They seem just as haphazard as Haven rivers, except on a bit bigger scale. And while Haven has too many connections between rivers, Salem has too few. And the total lack of respect for elevation is very immersion-breaking.

The french tried this and they failed(panama canal)

'digging' a canal is not simply just digging, there's a lot of engineering that needs to be thought up and devised for it to be plausible and successful.

When the US took over building the Panama Canal it took them 10 years and cost them almost 9 Billion US Dollars in today's standard, and the canal is just about obsolete for modern ships now.

My point is that it's not plausible for some hearthling to swing his shovel all day to dig a canal through an island.

If it's anything they actually do, it is to respect elevation, though.

Maybe they're supposed to, but they don't. Or we have wildly different definitions for respecting elevations. At best they seem to stop short of running up steep inclines (though not always), but they don't seem to care much for which way is downhill.

@ Potjeh - I can't see the image but the description sounds fine.
