Water/Bridge Ideas

Postby Lordryan » Tue Feb 08, 2011 1:34 am

Hey. I know all of this has been overdone and everything, but I want to add some ideas. Here they are..

1) Fords - Make it so that if you fill 1 square of water with 10 dirt/soil, it turns it into a shallow water. Now, boats are able to go through Shallow Water, so it won't obstruct water going traffic.
2)Stone Bridge - I'm thinking the same thing as a Ford, except you need 15 stones. This would be like a dock for fishing, etc. It would obstruct the river and all river-going traffic and boats.
3)Grand Bridge - You need to place 2 posts (4, maybe) that are in line with each other. You then have to put 50 stones, 20 boards, 10 rope, and 5 gold nuggets in each post (Or passed around). It would look a little like an extension bridge (The ones with the huge cables).

Well, I hope that you guys like my ideas. Intelligent discussion only.
My village(s) whoop yours :)

Fine idea, but there is no advantage of bridges over fords (save cart/wagon travel) and fords are the cheapest. Also, gold nuggets for a bridge is too pricey imo.

I'd change the requirements to like 200 stones and four bronze or iron metal bars. Stone bridges also need heavy requirements otherwise they will be used for griefing by anyone. I'd rather nothing blocked water traffic, but that's just me.

Indeed, they would be more useful if we had other means of ground transportation.

Fords should be a naturally occurring feature not one the player makes (or else the bridge becomes useless), and Bridges should not interfere with ship traffic in any way. I do like the suggestion of having two construction site posts but if the intent is to allow variable length or angles this is likely not possible due to art requirements, a limited set of angles and lengths would be required.

I think its a good idea as a whole. Fords would be a lengthy way to get across a river if you had no other options, and bridges would make it possible to get across with wagons etc. Also, you can make solid ground to build rams on to conquer impenetrable island fortresses. However bridges that block water traffic would be a grief paradise. Grand bridges would be a waste of resources if you have the other two options.
Today is a good day to die.

I don't like the idea of fords, there seems little to no point other than giving lower level guys a way of crossing a river and I feel that bridges, if implemented at all, should be reserved for higher level players and should be almost exclusively a community effort. However, if fords (artificial ones at least) are implemented I think they should decay rapidly.

I'd like to put forward the following proposal/refinement:

1) Fords - decay rapidly (3 hours), can be destroyed by even new players, obstructs row boats but not rafts, requires 2 blocks of wood - 5 stones - 10 soil/clay for every tile, cannot be crossed by a cart but can be crossed by a wagon or a battering ram.

2) Wooden Bridge/dock - will obstruct row boats and rafts, it is also fragile and can be destroyed by a mid(ish)-level player on a boat (STR*MC or UC/2 >= 200) and only be used for short spans (10 tiles or less), can be crossed by all traffic (wagons and carts) and is also the cheapest bridge requiring 30 Rope-200 blocks of wood-100 boards for the initial segment, an equal amount for the final segment and 10 rope-20 blocks of wood-10 boards for mid-spans.

3)Stone Bridge - Will obstruct rafts but not row boats(it's assumed that you're using the raft to haul larger/taller goods), cannot be destroyed unless you use a battering ram or have a ridiculously godly amount of STR, can span 30 or less tiles, uses 200 stone - 20 bars of metal(any metal) - 200 blocks of wood - 100 boards for the initial segment, an equal amount for the final segment and 50 stone - 72 blocks of wood - 50 boards for mid-spans.

4) Capital Bridge - Obstructs no river traffic, same requirements for destruction but the people using the ram must be very strong individuals, spans 50 or less tiles, initial segment: 50 iron or steel bars - 200 brick - 300 blocks of wood - 250 boards - 100 Rope - 20 beautiful Dreams - 1 Four leaf clover, HALF the amount for the final segment (except the clover and dreams) and 10 bricks - 100 blocks - 80 boards - 30 rope for midspans.

5) Causeway, obstructs all river traffic, cannot be destroyed but will decay, can hold any and all means of transport and buildings (but if one square a building/construction is on decays the whole thing is gone) if paved . Requires 100 soil/clay - 50 stone/brick - 40 blocks of wood - 40 boards for every single tile.

2-5 would all require you build on top of a ford.

I'd also like to add that the Capital Bridge could also be fitted with palisade gates letting the group responsible for the building of it regulate river traffic if they wish, but really the Capital bridge would be more of a status symbol then anything else that lets communities flaunt their total awesomeness to all passer-bys.

I've never used them either but I imagine they're like a boat, if you have a long enough one that spans a short river you can right click>Avast!>Ctrl click the other side of the river.
