theres a bucket attached to the well, no need to try dunking a barrel in there, just use barrel on well to fill it would work fine, or barrel on shallow water...this has been discussed before, I just can't remember where.

I tried that today :D i was wondering if it should work. But i cant see the logistics of filling a barrel at a well. Would you be able to fill a whole barrel with one swipe IRL? :)

If you have a rope thick enough to support the weight and strength (or pulley/lever system) enough to winch it up, there's no reason you couldn't. 100L water = 100kg if I'm doing my math in my sleep deprived head right. Even a simple block and tackle can let an average man lift this with little effort.

Realism argument...

It is just bad gameplay that you cannot do this. So yes, needs to be added.
