Small Homes

Postby Peter » Mon Dec 28, 2009 6:07 am

I feel that new players and characters should have simple housing options. Here's what I'm thinking:

-Lean-to: Made entirely of branches and a few units of string to bundle them together, the Lean-to is an immobile storage structure that eventually decays into dust. It is slightly smaller than a chest or cabinet.

-Tent: While it seems that it would be better to have this made of cloth, leather (or rawhide) is actually somewhat easier to acquire (since it doesn't need a loom. This may be a kind of bed.

The idea is that a newbie will have some things to build that will let them feel like they've settled in a place without putting permanent log cabins everywhere.
Surprise.

quoted for emphasis.

we really need something for this. i do like the idea of the tent being just a bed, where before when it had been discussed it had been proposed as an enterable structure. i'm actually kind of on the fence about this one, because there should be some sleeping option that doesn't require access to wheat, and i did kind of like the idea of the tent being something you could enter and store things in without decay, but i don't know if that's really necessary. my wicker baskets and urns haven't decayed since i set up camp, and if the inside of the tent was immune to decay you could put cabinets in it, which doesn't really make sense.

I think the idea of it being enterable was mainly to be able to escape from animals, but I may be mistaken. This need was eliminated when they made it to where only bears aggro, and even then wander off after a KO.
Maybe give the tent some sort of built-in sleeping bag inside it when u enter, with one other tile. Dont allow objects to be carried in.
I agree that a less permanent way to settle than making cabins should be implemented.
But I also wish we could destroy cabins, and spill their yummy contents all over like a giant pinata.

I think most objects should be able to go into tents such as meat grinders, chests, and other containers/tools perhaps just not cupboards (and wardrobes as if it mattered). I agree with Sab that such doesn't make sense unless the tents are frikin huge.

Should be able to make it out of dried hides, strings, sticks, blocks and boards in minimal quantities. 2-6 of each.

Tents should be destroyable if they are empty.

i would think hides, rope, and branches would be sufficient, not sure why it would need boards or blocks

Depends how big it actually is. IOW, is it a polyhedron or a pyramid?

Well, if it's made of a few dried hides and sticks, it's probably going to be more of a tepee, which would of course wouldn't have room for tall items.

One good reason for them being a kind of outdoor bed is that that would leave open the possibility of them being packable, and thus movable.

I agree with this. I would probably say the biggest thing you could put in there is a boat. Thats not to bad right seeing how boats arnt rly freakn huge.they can either put ther prized boat in or two small containers biggest im thinkn is a chest or a barrel.if their smart >_> they would put that in the the boat then the boat in the tent thus taken up even less room. I beilieve the tent should be collapsable only if empty and destroyable only if empty. A collapsable tent would be like a big object you would have to carry or store it in a boat.
