I'll have to disagree here, the defender usually does better in battles because they're entrenched, which will only happen IF they know the enemy is coming.
If bandits were to attack you while you were placidly harvesting wheat, I doubt you'd win. Combat readiness > Turf advantage
I'd rather have the ability to send out an "Alert marker" on the map, which will signal everyone nearby to either prepare to fight or run.
Also, there should be a massive advantage gain when more than 1 person is attacking the same target. And maybe a maneuver to nullify it.
