H&H for iOS or Android OS

Thoughts on the further development of Haven & Hearth? Feel free to opine!

I would use it if a client was made. I could see potential in this, people would use this when they're just waiting for time to pass, like while waiting in an airport, or in the doctor's office (and not the one in the TARDIS)

Jogl2 introduces profiles which would help ensure that only GLES compatible functionality was being used.

Unfortunately haven UI has a lot of AWT in it, which android does not support.

You could get a haven client running on Android with a lot less bother than starting from scratch, but it'd still be quite a large effort.

for the 800 x 600 base client the super phones (nexus one, etc) would be fine for looking at

I sometimes play H&H on my android phone with VNC.
It would be crap for PVP but it is fine for wandering around in your base keeping up the learning and odds and ends while you are not at your PC.
Of course you need to have VNC running on your PC, but that is no biggie.
Anyway - It works for me so I thought that it was worth necroing this thread for. Until phones are powerful enough to run the client natively (they nearly are now - even with the dalvik issues I reckon)
Give it t try if you want to play H&H on your android it works.
Tv

EDIT: Obviously secure your PC properly if you are running VNC...... Just a thought.

I've run into this page http://www.netmite.com/android/srv/2.0/getapk.php
Is there any way to run a client (using that page or not) in android? Is the only way developing a new client for it?

I'm using a 7" tablet, so the screen size wouldn't be a problem.

Thanks

I've obviously not dug into Android as much as some of the other people here have. IF everything in the Java packages are supported in Android, then it should work. Otherwise, you will just get compile errors and a failure to compile. So far the only way anyone has come up with a way to play on a smartphone is to use some sort of remote desktop package.

like trav said earlier, hnh uses quite a bit of AWT and AWT doesn't seem to be supported by androids so unless you figure a way around that with androids graphics libraries their probably won't be any android full hnh.

you could make mini hnh apps like logging in, using inventories (obviously not with haven's normal UI widgets, some modified list that gives all the ablities), study window, chat window but it'd have to be modified a bit from hnh chat for font/rendering purposes.

Thought about documenting the client/server interfaces just so that anyone with the gumption to create a brand new client for iOS or Android (or any other device) could do so. I've not started yet because I wasn't sure where I would put it and didn't want a half done project or something out of date laying around useless if it was something the community in general wanted and supported.

If anyone else thinks it's a good idea, PM and I'll get a thread in Wizards' Tower going.

but how would you get past the amount of resources HnH uses? Even though the game isn't fully rendered 3d JVM tends to take up a fair amount of resources.

H&H APP... With the intent to play a mmo?

Worst idea ever, since your taking a computer game and attempting to stuff it into a mobile device....

And from the looks of it, you think that packing computer games into apps is a genius idea that everyone accepts???

Seriously, just because mobile devices are thriving these days does not mean you can bring serious online gaming into them...

The complexity is way too huge to be packed into a small device... Not to mention the resolution of the mmo where players can use custom clients to snipe you off-map...

All you are doing is taking the mobile audience and turning them into complainers and whiners when they start filling these forums complaining that they are getting sniped or killed or robbed without seeing anything...
