Do rats placed in mines not despawn?

I assume it's just that the Pinewood mine(s) are busy enough for people to keep seeing them and resetting the timer.

Also, I assume in the future that rats will spread disease, chickens will lay eggs (that are actually usable), and frogs will...

Also, they never last that long with server crashes, and like you said, despawning.
