Hmm, seeing the response, that post may have been poorly worded.
Have you ever seen a pole fence?
Would you seriously consider spending wrought iron for a lock and key for its gate?

Pole fence gates will obviously not have a lock.

I hadn't and by the looks of that thing, if you tried to jump it you'd be likely to knock it over... I probably wouldn't want to spend wrought on a pole fence key, but I'd happily spend cast. I'd also be happy with jorb's solution of a keyless gate

The fence has some decent uses as it stands. You can wall off a claim relatively easily, and people would at least have to leave a vandalism clue to ransack your place. They also keep animals out, though that might change.
