The number of slots could be proportionate to the item q, and base could be lower than 1 if you want to make it so that adding a gem to some item requires a minimum quality. The effect of gem would be proportionate to the gem's quality, and it would mostly be skill and stat boosts.

I love Diablo's gem setting system aswel. Uh, I tried making a quick mock-up of a layout for a possible menu:

Just an example to clarify:

Again just an idea ofc. :)

sorry for the terrible text mimic btw.

Having quality displayed as part of an adv. interface option would be the bee's knees.

i dont like the diabolo idea (if i want to play diabolo, i lay diabolo and not h&h! :P)
but gems, used for improving an items q once could be nice
(or runes, made by certain kinds of stone)

i also really appreciate the amber idea. maybe dont make it a herb but a 0.0001% chance of getting it while digging sand (so like an earthworm, basically.... as long that doesnt enforces more macroing...)

Also don't really like Diablo style gem usage, it dose not seem to fit well with the games current crafting system and just feels to cliche to encrust everything with gems.

Amber when digging in sand sounds like a recipe for macro, as a foragable you atleast encourage active movement and exploration. My though would be that the Amber has a spawn probabiliy on par with Bolette which given the low amount of sand means they will be atleast as rare and valuable as Pearls.

Gems should have more of a spiritual effect when used in crafting, rather than seeing noticeable physical effects.

This means that wearing these items and being in a party, will give nearby party members small but noticeable buff that can't stack.

The item gives the user two things:
1) Incremental (Stat/Skill/Personal Belief/etc)
2) Party Buff (Learning Ability/Stamina Efficiency/etc)
