There definitely should be caps to combat (and possibly other) skills.

The apparent problem that might arise - "omg 100 in everything nothing to do, bye" - is already solved by world resets.

What "caps" did the real world have? :P

Stone weapons...
Bronze, iron, bone, arrow, bolt...
Gunpowder, Repeaters...
Militarization of flight.
Splitting the atom?

Real world could very well evolve virtually endlessly as there is always a slight improvement to be made.
This follows from the fact that nothing is perfect.

Thus, the arms race in game just mirrors the real world.
Sucks to finish second in that one.

The proposal made by burgingham make it so the arms race isn't based on grinding LP its based on grinding quality of goods. So there's still a race its just much simpler. Though I'd like to see decay on weapons if the purposed weapon q : cap comes about.

Though figuring out a good one for UA is tricky sense its suppose to not suppose to require equipment. This implies that UA should be competitive with MC though if we remove the ability to be a monk and cause MC to be almost flat out better then it might be interesting. But I'm a noob so I have no idea how stupid that statement is or isn't.

Isn't part of UA being able to dance around your opponent with your manuevers / stances. Though I'm just playing here I do like the idea.

Realism has no place in a discussion about balance. But I guess it could be boots too, if you insist :P

Generally, I think that various pieces of equipment should all have their UA and/or Melee rating, and your total cap is determined by simple addition of all your gear's ratings. That would open room for a lot more strategy in equipment selection, rather than everyone wearing steel plate and dragon helm in a developed world. Oh, and thanes should just boost your cap rather than boost your actual melee, since it'd be too easy to make a competitive combat character otherwise (which would in turn foster griefing).

so you'd need to make poor man's gloves before you could fight an ant?

if items like nettle clothing and leather armor effected your unarmed cap as well, it would work, i suppose
