There definitely should be caps to combat (and possibly other) skills.
The apparent problem that might arise - "omg 100 in everything nothing to do, bye" - is already solved by world resets.

Real world could very well evolve virtually endlessly as there is always a slight improvement to be made.
This follows from the fact that nothing is perfect.
Thus, the arms race in game just mirrors the real world.
Sucks to finish second in that one.
