just digging means water soaks into the ground...works fine if you're irrigating crops. for a canal you would need to face it with something be it stone or brick to keep water going. all the canals dug during the bronze age were faced with stone, and brick was used during iron age into medieval times, I have no clue what the setting is for this game though since some people never get past stone tools while others use steel

If looking for some "survival" realism, hearthling should be able to build moats to protect theyr palisades. however, moats are quite deep holes, soy they should interfere with first layer of underground in whe way that (in planning an attack) you could be able to perforate his underwater moat wall to drain water and go ahead with handstairs.

the problem is that moats, even being a realist option, will get us to a siege and defense game. because after moats comes catapults, castles, and a large etc..

Everyone is missing the concept that the water would be "shallow", walkable water which can be stomped back down to dirt if you wanted. It wouldn't be breaking anything seige mechanics

I'm fine with it the way you want it, just not the way you want it built...I think it has to be faced to keep the water from just being absorbed into the ground.

set up a canal point(like a cornerpost for a fence) for 25 stones/bricks(stone canals could be 1 tile wide brick 3?)
if its at edge of river/lake water flows through
then extend in the direction you need it(extending to river/lake gets water in it if you built in wrong spot)
adding an intersection would take 10 stones/bricks and can keep on going in same direction or branch into another(or both)

just like a wooden fence, and can be destroyed just as easilly(or easier)

You can't place a ram in shallow water.

the canals are easilly destroyed, if you're planning to ram someone's wall anyway you're not worried about vandalism scents are you?
