IMHO farming shouldn't be nerfed that strongly. HQ soil is insanely hard to find I've only heard of about 5 spots with 30+ soil between the main super grid and the little bit of the eastern I explored looking for my tin mine. Only 2 @ 50 plus. Perhaps if there is a way to import soil but as it is Baked goods are enough work.

I'd go so far as to say if you nerf farming like that based on an intrinsic Quality map than minerals should have the same.

Throw in depleting quality of resources and you've a very strange and unstable experiment in the social mechanics of the game. Not saying it's bad just...I wouldn't even begin to venture a prediction.

Also, JFloyd raises an interesting idea. Methods of improving your soil, and perhaps other resources, manually.

We could use compost piles for soil improvement. They could take straw and any other farming by-products and produce compost and earthworms for fishing.

I just had this GREAT idea.. maybe when you are making a settlement you can. Oh I don't know, Use a Dowsing rod to find a natural spring so you can, Oh I don't know. BUILD A WELL.

A WELL!! well, that just helps with water distribution. WOW! It's a miracle, they introduced a decent compromise before you mentioned it. Astonishing.

Don't build settlements away from wells.

Yes, because everyone in a dense town can have a well on his property. Seriously, what's so bad about introducing more infrastructure? Currently all we have is roads, and that just doesn't cut it. I want towns to look like towns, not like oversized hamlets. Aqueducts, along with other public infrastructure, would go a long way to achieve this goal. Basically, I want megaprojects other than same old boring walls, so communities can show off with how much time they wasted playing the game ;)

Think about it though, if you want water distribution you would have to do a lot of work to lay pipe. First you'd have to dig down a few times, then lay a cast iron pipe(or any other type). Each and every tile.

Now if there was a "fill all buckets" option for wells, or a "fill barrel" option, it would be easier to live with wells.

To all of ye saying "just live near a well", not all players can afford such a luxury.

Back at nowhereville I settled before I made a dowsing rod. Had to walk ALLLLLLLLL the way to the damned Lake of Brodgar to get water. Needless to say, I gathered water in bulk.

Also, what about villages which are based around a certain resource? Not all mines have an aquifer near them.

So yeah, I'm all for aqueducts, piping, even primitive pumps. The Romans did it. But then again, Roman-style wells would be the answer to all of these problems as well.
