That mechanic works in all "free to play games" just look at league of legends etc people are buying "skins" and it works-this game is earning a lot of money i dont think it would work so great in hnh-lesser ammount of players but some people may like to have a green merchant etc. just because it looks different

The problem is that you can use any arguement for supporting this to support anything in the game. Clay is such a common resource I should be able to buy them. I can always find flotsam around so why can't I just buy it so I don't have to play the game, silk is something I can easily make but don't feel like doing can I just pay to have a merchant coat.

Also this is a permadeath game imagine some noob coming in and buying the starter pack then getting killed in like an hour. This would suck so much, he literally just wasted 5 bucks on nothing and he doesn't even understand how you're supposed to get those things normally or how the early game works.

And if you really want you can always pay someone to grind you that far. I mean for 5 bucks I'll get those items and won't kill you, though that's me.

these are both minor accomplishments for early game...

very minor! I know it takes an hour or so to get a boat and getting a backpack takes about 10 hours(about the same for a sling, and all that time is just waiting for hides to dry/leather to tan) so getting these things when you start is basicly just giving your character a small convenience that doesn't matter after a week(after a day really).

this isn't pay to win, its not like I suggested being able to buy pearls. yes a boat makes you more mobile so you can look around faster, but doesn't give you the best spot. yes a sling allows you to hunt, but you still have to invest in marksmanship. yes a backpack allows you to carry a little more, but who doesn't have a backpack after day 1 anyway?

As for the financial side - I don't wish to go into it again but cash shops in hnh is not the way forward imo.

guess I should have searched better, but never in any survival situation are you relying on nothing but your hands, if you're in a plane crash/shipwreck and lost on some deserted isle you atleast have the option to salvage parts from the wreckage...but I do see your point :P

shhhh! and yes there is always that option so its not really an "I paid money so now I'm better than you" situation.

No its not a wise idea. The items in quetion give plenty of reward for the steps to create them and by starting with them you defeat the purpose of survival. I certainly dont want to go int eo the whole I paid so i deserve more argument. It only creates bitterness.

Cosmetic items should never be cash items. It'd just paint a nice big target on those players and they'd literally die instantly to be robbed of their fancy re-coloured/re-skinned clothing. What better reason could you ask for than to murder someone to obtain something that most people do not have?

As for the starter pack, I do agree with others that those are rewarding accomplishments in the game and it'd kinda suck (for that individual player) to have that taken away. But, come on, let's be fair... H&H isn't really about survival, it's about quality and paranoia. Something like this would be a negligible edge, especially when the world's already started. It's completely insignificant compared to the high quality resources secured by earlier players. If H&H actually needs funding for the server, I think this would be completely harmless and not spoil the fun for anyone but the buyer, but if that's how they play games, so be it. If a player can, say, buy a boat for $1, who cares? It'll save them 10 minutes and it'll leave us with another boat to pick up along the side of the river.

You were thrown overboard by the storms that rocked the boat, which eventualy sank miles from where you washed up. There is no wreckage, you barely even have any clothes. You lay bereft on a sandy shore of a small island with nothing but a few trees, vegetation and rocks for company.

Once you recover from your shock and have had a look around you start to gather twigs to build a fire, night is approaching. After failing miserably to light a fire from a rock and a stick (it looks easy on tv) you huddle under some vegetation and fitfully sleep. The next day you start thinking of food and freedom, you fashion a makeshift fishing rod or use a sharp stone to turn a branch into a spear (jorb & loftar) and try to fish - again, this looks easier said than done.

You thought you saw light in the distance during the night but are not sure wether you were dreaming, either way, you decide on a raft. You make an axe from some stone and some wood - a week later and you realize your raft is basicaly crap and won't get you that far but you've learnt to fish now and light a fire, you've even managed to make clothing out of plants you've woven together with stripped vine.

Next step - a boat ......you're getting good at this and all the while gaining experience to produce better in the future ............

Therein lies the fun and achievement. :P

Oh, and btw, your boat sailed and you hadn't been dreaming, you reached a distant shore, there were lights, there were people! They ran to you calling out in a foreign tongue, some were naked, some had clothing made from animal hides and some wore long black garments and strange helmets, you thought they were priests, lol.

They pulled you from your boat, stripped you naked and took turns at hitting you 'til you died - you made out strange words like 'nab' and 'f....t' before passing into blackness.

You may also like to know they decapitated you and put your skull in a cupboard. :(

H&H isn't really about survival, it's about quality and paranoia

This, hair and other cosmetics would be quite cool and quite the incentive to donate for. Makes jorb do a bit of spritework too for a change.

jorb: It's called creative license. You know, that thing you seem to want to apply to logic, grammar and coherence? :)
