Here's an idea for swamp "resource" - quickmud. It would normally be invisible, but you could detect it by walking at the crawl speed with a stick in your hands (to probe the ground in front of you). If you step into quickmud, you get immobilized, and if nobody rescues you in a certain time period (half an hour, for example), you die. So, what's the point of this obstacle? Well, you can scout out a swamp and mark quickmud. Then, you go and steal from a nearby village. If you get spotted, you run for the swamp. Your pursuers would be unable to keep up with you as they don't know where the quickmud is so they have to crawl while you run.
