Maybe the color can change so it stops being solid and the shades on the inside vanishes, showing only the border.
Or simply make the shade transparent, and making the borders thin and dashed.
Personally, I think having everything decayed all the hell, would be the best way to indicate it has lost its authority. It would be more fun having a bit on uncertainty of weather you can raid the claim or not. Having a way to tell with 100% certainty 10 seconds after the claim fails seams a little lame.
Imagine this, you are running though the woods hunting rabbits, hoping to find a jackalope, when you come across a large palisade fence. You patrol the fence, which is in a stat of disrepair, and find a hole that you decide to enter. Inside the wall there the claim comes a meters short of covering the part of the wall you entered. Still unsure of weather the wall was in bad shape because owner is inactive, or just lazy, you know he was stupid for not claiming his wall. seeing a couple of timber houses and some scattered hearth fires you decide to explore a bit. looking at the house, you cant quite tell if is it just starting to turn red on not, but you decide that you are going to risk it, entering the house you see the back wall is lined with cupboards. The cupboards are full of nice and great stuff, including several bars of steal. you begin to take everything that is of even the slightest value. you take your time making sure that you are carrying only the best of the goods available. deciding that you can not possible leave some of this stuff behind, you go outside to look for a box to carry with you when you hearth back. upon going outside you see that one of the hearth fire is lite, you panic and quickly teleport back to safety
After you get back you realize that in the panic you left your only key at there house as well as your boat. and you are trapped within your own walls. hoping for the best, you decide to call it quites and go to bed, after all, they live way across the super grid. the next morning you try to log in and you find you character is dead, and everything you every care about has been taken or destroyed. The End
