Jorb makes some very good points that highlight the failings of other MMOs. Still his thinking of no PVP at all or all PVP everywhere is a sledgehammer approach to a situation that needs finesse.
To paraphrase his post - He states that he is trying to simulate the processes of the real world. Why not then, go to the real world for the solution?
If someone is standing on my garden plot, I do not shoot them dead right there, I call the police. Also, I do not constantly worry about a random stranger shooting me as I go about my day. Now this is not to say there risk at all of someone shooting me for my wallet or that there are places I shouldn't go if I don't want to be shot.
There are still people out there who would shoot me if they could but don't because of one thing - A powerful force they must answer to if they do - the justice system. There is the answer for how to handle both newbie killing and an unwanted person standing on your stuff.
In game, a new player starts within the borders of an NCP nation - Jorbia for example. I buy myself a little plot of land and start plowing it. If someone trespasses to get in my way or steal my stuff, he will find some NPCs called Jorbian rangers (or something less corny) on his tail and capture means a fine or some time in jail for his character. Should he kill me, those rangers will deal a tougher punishment - like death.
Jorbian life is safe but limiting. All of the best resources within its borders are already exhausted. In addition my buddies and I cant claim territory as our own or go kill destroy people we dont like.
Not only does Such a system strike a balance between risk and reward, players get to decide for themselves which kind of game they want and can change it just by moving in or out of the NPC nation.
I realize the game is in alpha right now and such a feature would require a good bit of work but something of the kind should be included before the game is called complete.
As things are, you will get people, like myself, who are attracted to anything open world, even if the game is harsh but I cant think of anyone else I know, online or off who would stay in the game after learning that there is no place where they cannot be killed on a whim by some more advanced player.
