UA would have a cap with no equipment too. Though making making both styles scale well would be difficult.

And @Potjeh: I do agree that no matter what J&L do to balance it, it will be awkward.

Jorb makes some very good points that highlight the failings of other MMOs. Still his thinking of no PVP at all or all PVP everywhere is a sledgehammer approach to a situation that needs finesse.

To paraphrase his post - He states that he is trying to simulate the processes of the real world. Why not then, go to the real world for the solution?

If someone is standing on my garden plot, I do not shoot them dead right there, I call the police. Also, I do not constantly worry about a random stranger shooting me as I go about my day. Now this is not to say there risk at all of someone shooting me for my wallet or that there are places I shouldn't go if I don't want to be shot.

There are still people out there who would shoot me if they could but don't because of one thing - A powerful force they must answer to if they do - the justice system. There is the answer for how to handle both newbie killing and an unwanted person standing on your stuff.

In game, a new player starts within the borders of an NCP nation - Jorbia for example. I buy myself a little plot of land and start plowing it. If someone trespasses to get in my way or steal my stuff, he will find some NPCs called Jorbian rangers (or something less corny) on his tail and capture means a fine or some time in jail for his character. Should he kill me, those rangers will deal a tougher punishment - like death.

Jorbian life is safe but limiting. All of the best resources within its borders are already exhausted. In addition my buddies and I cant claim territory as our own or go kill destroy people we dont like.

Not only does Such a system strike a balance between risk and reward, players get to decide for themselves which kind of game they want and can change it just by moving in or out of the NPC nation.

I realize the game is in alpha right now and such a feature would require a good bit of work but something of the kind should be included before the game is called complete.

As things are, you will get people, like myself, who are attracted to anything open world, even if the game is harsh but I cant think of anyone else I know, online or off who would stay in the game after learning that there is no place where they cannot be killed on a whim by some more advanced player.

we don't need an npc nation, we have player territory, the scent system, etc. we don't need npc rangers, we have player rangers. and there are plenty of places you can be safe. there are walls in this game for a reason.

I like H&H the way it is. Period. I could comment on Combat itself but seeing as how I don't know yet how to change it for the better, I wont. If people want to see order I think they should make it themselves in the form they want it.Trail, Npcs like that probably won't happen..

Can the Jorbian Rangers drop good curios so once I reach a strength level I can infinitely farm them with my buddies.

Also can someone who played through world 3 tell confirm what I've heard: That once people get established that rangers will gladly go around killing people for little to nothing.

back in world 3 you didn't even have to harm anyone else, if you left a scent even picking from abandoned claims you were very likely to be attacked by rangers.

or at least thats how i saw it. ;)

Back then you also got LP based on how much the person you killed had, getting theft would make you worth a decent enough bit of LP.
