No, I believe w4 was only 5x5, too.

Good explanation of maps sizes there. One of my personal favorites. As an FYI, not all the map references use the same sizing. They all have the same central point, though, so knowing what the various references are helps in translating.

Skeletons are pointless. They amass in great numbers everywhere thanks to lethal wild animals, thorns in feet, and rarely because of raiders.
At most it's indicative that the area is capable of spawning bears and boars.

As for abandoned lots, it's usually players who played for a few days and then quit. Otherwise players are offline.
Don't assume that a claim, a picket fence, and a hearth fire mean anything.

If you want to join a village, check out the Dwarves & Theives section. You'll never find one by just wandering in-game that will let you join (unless the village is a bunch of overly trusting fools, and then you don't want to be in "that" village).

there are so many abandoned lots,if someone had the criminal skills he could basically get barrels of food/wine etc.

Ya, pretty much. Just be careful about assuming what's abandoned and what's not. Since nothing decays on claimed land anymore it's almost impossible to tell if they just haven't logged in for the day yet or if they've been gone for months. You never know when you'll be stealing from an active player with a bone to pick.

a destroyed palisade and 28 skeletons can tell much from time to time.
