I do believe I read a article on Roman gold mining... At least where clay-rich areas were concerned, they'd just divert a river into a shaft and rip the mountain in two. (It was a bit more complicated than that, but basicly.) I doubt the haven engine could support such whimsical geologic deformation though. And it's Haven & Hearth, not Lead Cups & Aqueducts.
Yes I have heard of the discovery of tobacco in certain tombs from the ancient Egyptian period. However only the leaves were present not the seeds. Seeds for cultivation will have to of been introduced after colonization. But to avoid any further realism discussion lets stop here and agree to disagree on where we think things are.
Such terraforming techniques of diverting a river would be interesting but I agree its probably beyond the games abilities.
