The greatest difference between them is that the (L)GPL requires anyone who distributes the program to also distribute or link to its (possibly modified) source code, while the common BSD-style license lacks that requirement. Using a BSD license is pretty much equivalent to placing code in the public domain, except it requires any users of the code to acknowledge that usage.
