Removing Item Skill Buffs

Removing Item Skill Buffs

Postby serpentyngallery » Sat Nov 27, 2010 1:19 am

I'm sure noone will agree with this thought, but it occured to me that in some cases the skill buff aspect of things like Jewelry can be a bit too much at times. I have heard multiple people talk about spawning a fresh alt, grinding it up to murder, throwing a pair of thanes on it with a Dragon helm, and sending it out to murder the hopeless unwashed masses. In my mind the stat buff is more than enough to make the items worthwhile, without having that "added bonus."

Well, lets weigh the pros and cons:
Pro's:
More Charecter Investment (time and otherwise)
A better Diversity of specialized Skillsets (if everyone has to buy up the skills, there's a greater chance that some won't bother and focus on what they like to do, but making a Jack of All that much more valuable in a village setting)
and a possible side effect of Less Rampant Murder (more investment, less desire to loose your toons)

Cons:
I won't be able to throw on a pair of rings and be a 1 man village able to craft anything of equal to or better Q than anyone else in the village, even the specialized folk.

I'm eager to hear any other ideas on this, past the "This is STUPID IDEA, put in trash bin." I ask for logical reasons why the buffs shouldn't be removed, and before you say "To catch up to the already power leveled guys," after the last update when Melee was nerfed, it doesn't appear to really give you that much of an advantge any more, but I was never a melee hunter so I can't honestly describe the gameplay difference on that one.

Uh, maybe that's a problem with how much stats certain items give and the fact that jewelry quality isn't limited by anything other than how high you can push an attribute and a skill? I don't see why we should decide that no equipment should ever give attribute or skill points just because of one item that seems to be overpowered. The devs have expressed that the jewelry system will be different in the future (world 4) anyways.

I don't actually agree with this. I'd rather see item *STAT* buffs get removed, if we have to have either. I can fridge logic the ability of items to make you better at your craft (skill boost), but see no reason why they should improve your character (stat boost).

Well I think having Jewelry giving a % instead of flat number would prevent alts, but of course there's a couple problems with that.

I strongly disagree, there is already a discussed change that would fix this

Oh, I didn't realize that Dat, did a search for removing Item skill Buffs, and the entire thought was for reverse logic honestly. As long as there are items that buff specific skills, people will want buffs for other skills, so on and so forth. If you happen to remember the other topic that the conversation was in, if it's public that is, I'd love to read it... so much free time.
