Tree log decay, a source of new goodies

Postby ewlol » Sat Jan 29, 2011 11:12 pm

I propose a new addition to the game in which the logs of cut trees decay on the forest floor into a "decayed log" that attracts bugs, and initiates the growth of various types of fungi and molds.

Before I get started, I will say that the logs should only decay when left on natural terrain. Pavement and within houses should inhibit or even prevent decay.

Logs need a more interesting use than just for wood supplies. Our entire world is reliant on the action of insect creatures and the decomposing behavior of fungi. Without these miraculous things, our world would cease to function as it should. The collection of bugs and cultivation of mushrooms is a very interesting subject, and in my opinion would be a wonderful addition to the game.

The decomposition of logs should be directly affected by the terrain and plants underneath of the said logs. Soil, the ql of the log decaying, and the plants surrounding and around the log are of utmost importance. (Plants might be getting a tad complicated, maybe wheat results in a different species of mushroom than flax or peas, etc).

Logs would decay over time (obviously) and over a period of maybe 3 weeks disappear completely. During that time, a wealth of insects and fungi could have been collected for use.

Insects for consumption, obviously, and mushrooms used as ingredients, some molds for food, and then medicinal purposes.

I'm not going to go too crazy, but the fungi could be used to make some sort of medicine that stimulates activity (learning), or increases the replenish rate of SHP. Dunno.

Great idea, also do with this with stumps, and have trees grow back after a time. We need ways for the world to renew itself instead of being raped and then never repairing. Clear-cutting would be less serious an offense, and abandoned claims should decay and eventually be overgrown with trees. I'm tired of running across so many places that are never used, and are like a scar on the world. Stumps should take a bit longer to decay as well. After a while, it would seem that no one ever lived there, which would be awesome.

Speaking of abandoned claims, claims should be destroyed after a certain amount of time without the owner being on, to allow for decay and looting without some jackass tracking down these innocent folk and killing them, just for taking from abandoned claim that no one is using.

Anyways, back to your idea of logs, great idea, and a stepping stone for more intensive nature restoration ideas.

If it includes stumps, that would be perfect.

No thank you =/

Having re-read, I find 3 weeks to be long enough. Nvm the above.

Well, as far as I know those things we have at decaying logs are pretty unuseful. They can be used, that`s true, for learning but otherwise...
Got an idea, though: while it`s a game, maybe having a log at the cave would give some edible substanses? This way, along with underwater lakes rich with fish we`d have a supply of food underground.
