Peat - Alternative to coal

Postby Zampfeo » Thu Feb 24, 2011 8:39 am

Peat is a very primitive source of fuel found in many wetlands. It's decaying plant matter that is often dug and set to dry to be burned later as fuel.

This could be implemented as an alternative for those looking for high quality fuel without high enough survival to make a decent bone saw. One would dig in a swamp and would get peat dependent on the soil quality. This would give swamps more use and could even lead to some becoming claimed. The peat would then be left to dry on a herbalist table and act just like coal afterwards.

So, in short this would:

Make high Q swamps valuable
Give a decent fuel source to those without a dedicated survivalist/carpenter/tree farmer
Give a decent fuel source to those without clay
Give another use for the shovel

The dried peat would be soft capped by the herbalist tables so high Q boards are still needed, but it would be an initial investment instead of a long term commitment. As a consequence, one must wait an extended period of time for the peat to dry.

I like this idea, it makes sense and fits with the lore.

The only thing I do not love there is using the herbalist tables for drying. Otherwise, it`s great idea.

High Quality swamps are already valuable, since it's the only secure source for getting high quality Wax.
There aren't many things where high Q wax really does matter, but some people prefer a High Q Cutthroat Cuirass over some Metal Armor.

I love this idea, and I support the suggestion that swamps (or marshes) contain peat nodes.

No they aren't. Good q wax can be obtained by Bee Hives by having high q crops around it.
Edit: What I meant to say was that swamps aren't the only high q wax source.

But the OP is a great idea.

A political rival once told Abraham Lincoln: "If I had a beard like yours, I'd shave".
Abe replied: "If I had a face like yours, I'd grow a beard".

It's true, since you can get candleberries from high Q swamps.

been suggested, good idea

Generally speaking, it would be fun and meaningful to implement more "base resources" for the various kinds of terrains -- it has just been hard for us to figure out just what. Heaths (and bogs) should yield peat, but it seems that has limited uses. The winds were actually an experiment in trying out a new kind of base resource, but I think we can all agree that they were a failure; at least in their current implementation and use.
loftar wrote:Yes, peat is something we've been planning to add. In particular, it would, of course, be entirely necessary for production of whiskey. ;) Right now, we just don't have any other use for it except for use as generic fuel, which would be pretty pointless given the general utility of branches.
