LPs for a murder

Postby pyrale » Thu Feb 24, 2011 11:33 am

As a brand newb, I was reading about game mechanics and how to use them, and I just discovered that murdering someone gives a LP reward.

As I don't really understand the game choices behind this, I'd like to know if someone with a good memory has some pointers to threads explicating those dev choices (as researching LP + murder or kill matches half of the forum posts...).

And if no such discussion existed, what's your opinion about this and how it's justified ?

Rather than ask, why kill, ask yourself this: why not? What particular insight or knowledge would have been gained by allowing this particular motile body of flesh to continue its miserable bedraggled existence? What particular grand idea or spectacular achievement would they have wrought if they were not curtailed by the edge of your blade? Or, if spiritually motivated, would not the same forces that suggest that you spare his pathetic neck also have brought you into the power to accomplish this end? Surely if there was some all powerful divine force, then it also must have demanded this position, and your dominance. Who do you think God really favors in the web? The spider, or the fly?

You get LP for such insights brought about by repeated stabbings. This is also why in FF games, you get coins for killing rabbits.

You get 1% lp from whoever you just murdered. Mechanically, it facilitates raiding, war, and conflict in general. It comes with its own dangers and risks, beyond just the combat itself, but it's rewarding to those who fight the battles, range the criminals, and raid the newbies. If risks don't have a reward, no one will take them.

Just a precision about the topic : I'm not really interested in roleplaying explanations. Wether you roleplay a carebear or a psychopath doesn't justify (or discards) this game mechanism, and one will always find a role to suit his gameplay.

It mostly is an incentive for weaker characters to take on risks against more powerful characters, considering the massive LP gains that you could get from it. Otherwise, the other subsidiary reasons for killing a character are already there: you get their resources, their gear and add to your e-peen and a LP reward would most likely not be necessary.

Well, the thing is, slaying humans is rarely the most dangerous game.

The LP you get for killing a bunny is a lot less than the LP you get from a bear. Same concept applies here.

OP is right. Murdering people should give no LP.

Also, killing of criminals (after they were summoned) should not leave scents.

wrong. it's always dangerous to kill people.

wrong. the game can't make moral distinctions. a murder is a murder.
