Thoughts on the further development of Haven & Hearth? Feel free to opine!

Interface and stuff need to be a little bit more smooth

Postby halorocks22 » Sat Jun 18, 2011 10:31 pm

Hey, I recently found Haven and Hearth, But I found this game at first to be EXTREEEEEEEEEEMELY confusing. I read the guides and everything, and the fact that there wasn't much labels or a better tutorial made me go "??????". Also, the lack of stone/trees at the spawn kinda made me -sad face-, And during the spawn I accidentally dropped my shirt because I was trying to find out how to wear stuff and i couldn't pick it up because it was in the territory of some guy named Peace. I also really hope the interface will be improved, because sometimes when i right-click trees or anything other than that nothing will pop up, and when im trying to pick up items i sometimes have to move around quite a bit. Still a great game with a great idea though, ^_^

Climb up the ladder instead of taking the door in the floor.

Also, it's generally agreed upon that the interface in H&H is horrid, especially for new players. However, it's also unlikely to be changed ANY time soon, if ever, so you learn to deal with it.

This idea kind of falls into "Its not on the devs' priority list" as this is a pet project and not a commercial one tutorials are probably never going to come around. Also for improved interfaces that's something that the devs have specifically said they aren't worried about, its open source so you are free to mod it as much as you want. Most suggest either Ender, or Gil-something I forget but its a cleaner mod with night vision and fullscreen but less fancy ender stuff.

The reason u cant get anything from the trees is cause someone else already did =p. But yes, i agree this game is confusing as all hell when starting out. Fortunatly for me i started out with ~8 friends so we kinda tackled it together, otherwise i'd still probably be in a forest somewhere trying to figure out how to build stuff ^.^

It's always a good idea to read the manual before jumping into games. Even more so with independent developers. Unfortunately, there isn't a good, concise manual. There are a few things, though, on the forums in "How Do I?" and on the wiki

As far as the interface goes, what are your suggestions? Do you have anything specific in mind or just bitching about how obtuse the interface is to start out?
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

For a while now How-to links directly to Jackard's guide (Good shit homie).

The GUI could definitely use improvements but I'm pretty sure that's very far on the back burner. I recall Trav attempting some stuff to make it so you could actually pull windows outside the 'game window', didn't work so well though in the end.

Would be nice to have some more custom GUIs made, not just redrawn shit, but a fully custom GUI.
