Should mining require a light source?

Postby cloakblade » Wed Jun 12, 2013 8:38 pm

I find it kind of odd that the metal industry can be faster than the farming industry. And a main reason for this is that a light source is only ascetically applicable and has no real in game value. What if we applied a 50% cave in chance to mining a square without a light source near it and removed the torch newbies start with. This would slow mining to being started until after either cloth or candles are being produced and would make metal in general much rarer.

hmm i don't think that it's a good idea - in my opinion both industries go hand in hand , i've been a Hermit with 2 mains concentrating in farming and metal stuff last world and thus seen how much both depend on one another to develop - and i don't see any reasons why metals should be more rare. It only would set back even more those who don't play in a group.

That is a fair point it will hurt hermits more. I just feel like farming is slower to set up I mean you kill a bear for a cape and necklace, or even eating the meat of a boar, and bam you have mining. You have to wait for WWWs to dry and then plant them and then you will finally have crops. It just seems like the start up is much faster for metals.

Did you mine yet in this world? It took me longer to mine a tile and get 3 ores from it (which all went stone btw) and all the time fearing a cave in than to collect 20 WWW and put them in racks where they dry left alone ...oh not to forget i haven't killed any animals yet but rabbits and chicken...probably because i invested more time in getting maps rather than grind LP to get all stats up ;)

Also what i see at my neighbours places - all have farms up before they going to hunt boar, bear, building Pali and start mining - there are for sure more farms than mines (in caves)

Wait can you do this?

And yeah I guess you always have light sources from campfires. I just see that the design was kind of to impose this idea on the game (as there are all these light source things including miner's helmet) but they are un-used.

Yup, without any skills. You only have to equip and unequp shirt or pants to discover a recipe for torches
(they are not usable as linen in other recipes tough)

you can use them to make a carpet, so you can probably also use them to make banners...
