Musical Instruments

Postby niltrias » Sun Jun 14, 2009 11:51 am

Just a random idea...
I think it would be neat to have musical instruments that, when played, could be heard from off screen (kind of like combat sounds) and would throw up a flashing circle like a dowsing rod showing the direction of the sound. Imagine the possibilities.

1)
The heavy bronze bell in the village roundhouse tolled heavily. The farmers, out in the fields, dropped their hoes (hint hint) and grabbed their spears (hint hint), racing for the village center. This time, they were ready. With the help of the ranger they had recently hired, THIS bandit raid would be the last...

2) The wandering peddler began to play a tune on his pan pipes as he neared the village, as he always did. Almost immediately, a curious group of villagers began to leave their jobs and follow him to the village square, eager to see what good he had brought from far-off lands.

3) The hunter, about to claim and butcher the rabbit he had just managed to hunt down, paused when he heard the clarion call of the hunting horn. A horn...that could only mean one thing. Someone in the hunting party had cornered a bear, or more likely was cornered by it. The rabbit would have to wait. He grabbed the steel arrow he had used to kill the rabbit and sped off in the direction of the horn.

I love the idea of instruments. I've always wanted things like that implemented in games, whether or not they give stat buffs.

Ill say a hell yeah to this, The only problem I can see is keeping the 'tunes' you make insynq with the network latency and all.

Perhaps playing an instrument 'records' chunks of sound in a text format, which then goes to the server, and from the server is broadcasted around the instrument, this way tones wouldn't arrive in irratic moments due to lag or whatnot. instead every listeners client gets a sort of sheet music with timing and notes so that lag becomes irrelivant for the synq of the tune. ((then again, bands of multiple people with multiple instruments would still be out of synq like hell oO))

ahwell... just me rambling, I love the idea, and I had the same idea for something I was planning myself aswell.

Great news! If they add even more entertainment skills, we can start a circus and travel from town to town, bringing joy, loss of productivity and rise in criminal activities wherever we go :D

I like all of the suggestions in the first post. !
The ones who see things differently.

You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
