an Idea for a 2nd Server

Postby Andover » Fri Feb 19, 2010 6:52 pm

I started thinking about this and I think it would be a neat change to the game and would be attractive to "Elite" players who want to challange themselves.

the 2nd server would be an "Extreme Survival" server

Land: There would be a circluar island (about the 1/2 of a supergrid in size) , with various scattered islands. The terrain would mostly be "Frozen Tundra" and the islands would be split between random icebergs with nothing on them or small (about the size of what most villages are) with either a mine or scattered patches of resources on them.

Trees,Stone and other "Natural" resources : Would be "uncommon" and it would be harder to find but still easily findable

Food Sources: With a decreased level of forests and other resources wild game would be more scarce and the primary source of food would be fishing on the coast.

Boats, Swimming: would be very important for getting to the resources needed

NPC towns: there would be 1 decent sized town in the middle , and 2 small outpost type towns on the coasts

2 New buildings: Since the Hearthlings would be living in a harsh environment with very limited resources they would need a way to get resources , NEVER FEAR for there will be 2 new buildings , 1 allowing a small amount of resources to be brought in daily. a "Harbour" would cost quite a bit to make (~500-1000 logs) and would get a shipment of 50 logs, 25 boards, various amounts of ore , herbs and a few bits of meat from the "Mainland" (The setting of the server is that the hearthlings are trying to live in the frozen north of the planet) , and the other building would be a "Dock" (~100-150 logs) that would allow for storage of boats and easy deployment of boats into the water.

Heres the part thats gonna be tough to decide on, should there be a player limit , my answer would be Yes and probably limit it to 1k-2k players with inactive players and dead players freeing up slots for others to join.

New Player protection would need to be added as well (New players cant be murdered for 7 days)

Comments? Suggestions?

No, if there is a second server it should be a test server that allows player to arbitrarily declare their stats and equipment for focused testing of systems such as combat.

This game is in alpha. I dont think they want to purchase equipment for a second live server or have the money to do so. They should concentrate on one server.

I like how your idea of a "hard" world is one that is considerably easier to live in than the real one.

I'm not against graduated starting difficulties, though- I suspect that they can be done as part of the same server.
Make three exits from the starting cave: A staircase, a ladder, and a rough rock wall. The more difficult the exit, the lower the civ rating of the random place you start.

Of course, I wouldn't use it myself, but if you wanted to take something useful from this idea, it'd be that.
Surprise.

That's a bad idea. It's just a way for people to make cheap scouts to see who has what and where with riskless toons. I really try not to be a general asshole and I realize that sometimes we miss the obvious shit that some of our suggestions would cause but do people even bother to mull over the real consequences of what they're suggesting or do you just blurt shit out at random as it occurs to you?

You have to ask? Hell, we all do that from time to time... Sleepless nights are killer for such a thing.
