It's a sunk cost fallacy. They defended him when it seemed like a joke, and after he quadrupled down it feels like it's too late to back out of it. Either they win, or lose everything (in their mind).

I feel like you'd have to be a bit naive to believe some of these people are not actively trying to defend/downplay/deflect what Misa did. I mean, even if they didn't actively defend him they still didn't remove him from their village when said village contains minors...

It earnestly makes me very sad that Misa was not immediately excommunicated from the entire community. I have a very adversarial relationship with a lot of people here, but I thought there was a line and that raping a kid was 30 kilometers behind it. Depressing.
