In fairness, this problem can largely be mitigated with some changes to the client from client makers without rewriting the whole thing. Boshaw fixed our client to not lag with lots of animals and im pretty sure ardennes pushed that fix to his public client later. I played the game at a solid 60 fps in 90% of cases. Even while watching meteor fights or while standing around 200 animals in their pens.

My computer was middle of the line around 6 years ago so im not exactly playing on anything fancy either.

Purus Pasta also had a feature to increase fps, but this basically worked by disabling all animations. I wouldn't call that a fix, but a temporary, sketchy workaround. It seems like this (disabling of animations) was the method used by boshaw as well.

All you did was turn off rendering animations, the creation of the animations still happens in the background and is what took up the resources. Boshaw stopped animations at the gob creation level thus the performance increase. That's like turning off your monitor and claiming your client doesn't lag because you can't see the graphics.

No it isn't. I had great increases in performance, sure it was a quick not very rigid nor proper fix. I remember doing some analyzing in visualvm and there was like 99% reduction in time usage for thing that I disabled, which used a lot of cpu time.

Lol, OK. Just like your skybox wasn't a memory leak but you just happened to push a code change to your sky box creation the day I told you it was a memory leak.
