Men do crime to you and leaving smells. You can take this smells to craft ghost of vengeance to slay this man. Ghost power is relative to man's power though, so I think it is pretty hard to be killed by this ghost. I am very bad at this game and have many men sending ghost to me, but they are dispatched quite easy. You can reading more from wikipedia.

If you don't mind wasted soil, former can be easily solved by bashing the stockpile.

you missed the leanto part, bud. it blocks the cart routes and forces leaving a scent when vandalising. It was resolved with extending the claim tho.
